‘Mohamed Salah ghosted, Konate out’ – Newcastle fans react to Liverpool heartbreak
Newcastle United supporters were delighted as they watched Liverpool get dumped out of the Champions League and lose star players to injury on an exhausting and emotionally draining night.
Arne Slot’s men had the worst possible preparation for Sunday’s (16 March) EFL Cup final against the Magpies, but Liverpool’s loss is being seen as Newcastle’s gain by those from the north-east.
Liverpool were dragged all the way to a penalty shootout after PSG defeated them 1-0 on the night at Anfield via Ousmane Dembele’s 12th-minute goal.
PSG then dispatched all four of their penalties while Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones had their efforts saved, bringing Liverpool’s European journey to an end.
The Reds will now be unable to complete a potential treble this season, but they remain well placed to secure a notable Premier League and EFL Cup double.
However, Slot’s men were handed several injury blows heading into the game against Newcastle on Sunday.

Liverpool’s situation went from bad to worse
Liverpool were not only knocked out of the Champions League but they were left with two potentially devastating defensive injuries.
Ibrahima Konte had to be replaced in extra time against PSG due to a fitness concern, and with Joe Gomez already out injured the Reds could be stretched at centre-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also had to be substituted due to suffering an ankle injury, with Slot admitting that he’d be “surprised” if the full-back featured at the weekend during his post-match press conference.

Newcastle fans are taking all the positives
It was a night to forget on all fronts for Liverpool fans, especially after footage leaked of Virgil Van Dijk talking to PSG officials in the tunnel after the game, sparking rumors about him leaving Anfield.
However, the Toon Army were able to see the positive side in Liverpool’s misfortune as they look ahead to the EFL Cup final.
