Mohamed Salah: Liverpool told to ‘bend the rules’ after ‘huge’ source reveal – pundit

Kevin Phillips has urged Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group to “bend the rules” to keep Mohamed Salah at the club.

The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it would be a “huge” blow to lose the 29-year-old when his Anfield deal expires.

This site revealed on Saturday (26 March) that Liverpool owners FSG remain hopeful of agreeing a new long-term contract with Salah – with his current deal set to expire in June 2023.

A source close to Liverpool has told Football Insider that club chiefs believe the Egyptian will eventually drop his wage demands and sign a “huge” new deal.

Salah wants £500,000-a-week to stay at Anfield, which he has claimed is not “crazy” given his achievements at Liverpool.

Phillips reinstated his belief that the former Chelsea man will commit his future to the Merseyside club.

“It looks like they’re not going to be held to ransom, that’s for sure,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“But sometimes you’ve got to make sacrifices and bend the rules to keep one of the world’s best players, and that’s what I’ve said all along.

“For me, it’d be a huge blow to lose him.

“I can understand their perspective, from a business point of view. But hopefully the two parties can come to some sort of positive conclusion.

“They’ll certainly have to pay out a massive amount to do that. When you’re dealing with world-class players and these contracts it does take a while – but I still believe it will get done.”

Salah has netted 28 goals and registered 10 assists in 36 Liverpool appearances this term.
