Mohamed Salah breakthrough: Major update on Liverpool talks today

Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool is increasingly unlikely to be sorted until later in the season, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside giants have held discussions with the superstar forward, 32, about an extension to his current deal, which expires next June, but there has yet to be a breakthrough in talks.

Sources say there is a sense that Salah and his camp are willing to assess other offers and how far clubs are willing to go to secure his services for next season and beyond.

That includes his current employers Liverpool, who want to tie down the Egyptian and end one of the three contract stalemates that is casting a cloud over their remarkable start under new manager Arne Slot.

The Merseysiders top both the Premier League and reformed Champions League going into Saturday evening’s clash against Aston Villa at Anfield.

But they have yet to secure new deals with Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Trent Alexander-Arnold, all of whom have been integral to the outstanding start but are out of contract next summer.

Liverpool are unconcerned by reports that the forward, 32, has already agreed terms with a Saudi club.

The club’s hierarchy believe Salah’s first choice is to extend beyond his current agreement, which runs until the end of the season.

However, it is believed the record-breaking 32-year-old forward wants “three more years” at the club where he has reached legendary status on the back of his goalscoring exploits.

That would take him at Anfield until the summer of 2027, when he will turn 35.

Gabriel Agbonlahor claimed in September that the Egyptian superstar has already committed to a move to the Middle East in next summer’s transfer window.

It was said live on air that Salah has been handed a “record-breaking contract” which will see him earn more than Cristiano Ronaldo and make him the face of the Saudi Pro League.

However, sources revealed to Football Insider that Liverpool are “not worried” about the speculation and believe they can agree to a new contract with their superstar forward.

Football Insider revealed on 8 September that the Reds are doing “everything they can” to keep their star man at the club, with a “bumper” new deal being offered.

Salah’s importance to Liverpool has been reaffirmed since Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

The winger has already scored nine goals and provided nine assists in 16 games under the new boss, to underline his status as one of the world’s outstanding players.

Significantly, he has started all 14 of Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League matches this season and was also a used sub in their League Cup wins over Brighton and West Ham.

Salah claimed in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Man United in early September that he has not been offered a new contract by the club.

Salah said: “You know this is my last year in the club. I just want to enjoy it. It’s not up to me but no one has spoken to me at the club.”

In other news, Liverpool could now sign an England international in a stunning ‘£40m’ deal.
