Monk delivers warning to Radrizzani ahead of Leeds showdown talks

By Harry Sykes

Garry Monk has warned Leeds powerbrokers that it will be even tougher to earn promotion from the Championship next season.

The Yorkshire giants challenged strongly for a place in the end-of-season play-offs only to suffer heartache last weekend after their draw against Norwich means they will finish a hugely promising campaign in seventh in the table.

Monk has earned widespread praise for transforming the fortunes of a team on a shoestring budget compared to many of Leeds’ play-off rivals.

But the manager, 38, has delivered a stark warning to joint-owner Andrea Radrizzani, who is reported to be on the verge of a full takeover, that shrewd planning is required to mount a campaign that will end with a place in the Premier League.

“”You have seen this season how competitive the Championship is and it is only going to get tougher, we have to be ready,” Monk said on Thursday to LUFC TV, as quoted by the official Leeds Twitter account.

“We need a clear plan and we need to build on the foundations and progression made this season.”

Monk felt emboldened enough to stress what is needed even though there are no guarantees he will return for a second campaign as manager.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and there have been reports that Radrizzani, who is set to buy the half-share of fellow owner Massimo Cellino, is planning to appoint a new manager.

Nevertheless, Monk explained on Thursday that he will sit down with the sports media tycoon and other Elland Road officials for talks on Sunday following the final home match of the season against Wigan Athletic.

Those discussions will decide whether the former Swansea manager will return for a second year in the dugout.
