Darren Bent has been left raving as Tottenham close in on the “brilliant signing” of Matt Doherty from Wolves.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker admits he thinks the right-back is a more impressive signing than new addition Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
As revealed by Football Insider, Tottenham have agreed terms of a deal worth up to £16million to sign the Wolves star and the 28-year-old is set to undergo a medical and finalise a move.
Bent admits he is a little surprised that Wolves have allowed the Republic of Ireland international to join Spurs and insists Jose Mourinho is getting a top-quality player.
Bent told Football Insider: “He’s such a good player, such a brilliant, brilliant player, it’s surprising Wolves are even letting him go.
“He’s been such a good servant – the other thing is I know he’s a lifelong Arsenal fan and I thought he was going to Arsenal, that was all the talk that he was going to Arsenal and then he’s ended up going to Spurs so well played to them.
“He’s a top right-back, he has been for a number of years, even when Wolves were very, very poor, he was still their standout performer. He’s a modern-day right-back, good distribution, can go past people, can play, can score a goal.
“I think it’s a brilliant, brilliant signing. I’m a lot more impressed with that signing than I am Hojbjerg.”
Doherty has a total of 75 Premier League appearances under his belt and is set to leave Wolves after 305 games for the club.
Serge Aurier is Mourinho’s only natural senior right-back at Spurs, although Japhet Tanganga has filled in as a makeshift option on occasion.
In other Tottenham news, a never-before-seen attacker has been tipped to make waves in north London next season.
