Aston Villa ‘make Morgan Rogers decision’ as Tottenham enter race for signature

Aston Villa are set to offer Morgan Rogers a new contract amid fresh transfer interest from Tottenham.

After excelling for Villa last term, Rogers has already attracted advances from Chelsea, as Enzo Maresca plots a title challenge at Stamford Bridge.

The England international notched an impressive return of 14 goals and 13 assists in 54 appearances across all competitions last term.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are struggling with UEFA’s squad cost rules, which could make them vulnerable to approaches for Rogers.

Amid the transfer interest in Rogers, Aston Villa are also eager to retain John McGinn, whereas Jacob Ramsey is set to join Newcastle United.

Like the former Middlesbrough man, McGinn was a key player as Unai Emery’s men reached the Champions League quarter-finals last campaign.

Meanwhile, as reported by the Daily Mail on Friday, 15 August: “Villa are adamant they do not have to sell any of their star men, with Morgan Rogers and John McGinn among those currently deemed off limits.

“That has not quelled interest in Rogers, though, and Daily Mail Sport can reveal Tottenham are the latest club to be showing interest in the 23-year-old attacker.

“Given Villa’s insistence that Rogers cannot leave in this window, it is unclear whether Spurs will bid if they are given no encouragement.

“The likeliest outcome at this stage, though, is that both he and McGinn are offered improved contracts and, in the case of Rogers, stay for at least one more year.”

Tottenham’s previous efforts to sign Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, coupled with their current interest in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, proves that the Lilywhites are eager to sign a playmaker this summer.

Rogers is a key player for Villa

The potential acquisition of Rogers would help new boss Thomas Frank put his stamp on Spurs ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

However, the Aston Villa man should be eager to remain in the West Midlands for another season.

The attacking midfielder’s priority must be to remain in England contention ahead of next summer’s World Cup and ensure that he represents the Three Lions on the biggest stage.

While joining Spurs could be a good move for Rogers, he has already proven that he can perform well regularly for Villa and should continue to do so.

If the 23-year-old continues to shine for Emery’s side, he will face no issues in making Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

Meanwhile, former club scout Bryan King has weighed in on the transfer interest in Leon Bailey in a Villa News exclusive.
