Morgan Rogers sends ‘big’ Aston Villa message as Cole Palmer reacts to post

Morgan Rogers took to social media after the Aston Villa victory over Southampton to celebrate the hard-fought result.

Unai Emery’s side strained to overcome the bottom side 1-0 at Villa Park on 7 December, thanks to a goal from Jhon Duran in a rare Premier League start which fans expect to keep Ollie Watkins out of the XI longer-term.

Following the match Rogers, 22, hailed the second consecutive victory, having also beaten Brentford 3-1 in midweek (4 December), writing on his Instagram, “2 in a row!! Big win in tricky conditions. UTV”, in a post was liked by his friend and Chelsea rival Cole Palmer.

He also posted more photos from the game on his stories, including one of himself lying prone on the pitch at the final whistle with the caption “tank on empty”.

Aston Villa down struggling Russell Martin and Southampton

Rogers played the full game at Villa Park, picking up a 96th-minute booking along the way, in a match where his side should surely have made easier work of things.

Russell Martin’s insistence on having his men play out from the back infuriated Tim Sherwood watching live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday and put the visitors in trouble plenty of times.

It is also part of the reason why the result was tipped by Saints fans to end their manager’s time in charge, having also been thrashed 5-1 at home by Chelsea in midweek.

But Villa returned to struggling in front of goal as Duran produced the only decisive finish and Watkins struggled off the bench.

The Villans have now only scored more the one on a two occasions in the past 10 outings, the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on 23 November and the victory over Brentford.

Ultimately it was a three points that helps put the club back on track towards pushing into the top four, and Palmer’s involvement didn’t see Rogers trolled by his ex-Man City teammate this time.
