Morgan Rogers hits out at VAR in furious Aston Villa message, Youri Tielemans reacts

Morgan Rogers expressed his frustration with VAR after his goal was ruled out during Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Brentford.

Aston Villa returned to winning ways in the Premier League thanks to Ollie Watkins, who scored against his former club in the 49th minute to secure all three points.

However, it was a disallowed goal from Rogers that left many questioning the decision. The young forward thought he had added to Villa’s tally, only for VAR to intervene and rule out the goal, with Watkins deemed offside by the smallest of margins.

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett was vocal in his criticism of the VAR decision, as he will continue to “to doubt the accuracy” of tight VAR calls until a semi-automated system is in place.

Hackett also slammed VAR when Rogers had a similar goal disallowed in Villa’s 4-1 loss to Crystal Palace on 25 February, called for a change in the rules to ensure attackers are given the benefit of the doubt in such marginal situations.

Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans share laugh at Morgan Rogers’ VAR post

After his goal was ruled out in the victory over Brentford, Rogers posted several pictures from the game on Instagram, alongside the caption: “Me and VAR don’t get on” complete with an angry face emoji.

His teammates were quick to see the humour in his message, with Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne both commenting with laughing emojis, lightening the mood after the frustrating decision.

Aston Villa are now on a run of three consecutive wins in all competitions, having triumphed over Cardiff City, Club Brugge, and now Brentford. Rogers has been a key part of this successful run but also the entire season, contributing 12 goals and six assists in 40 appearances.

Morgan Rogers continues to impress as Aston Villa eye Champions League progression

Rogers has firmly established himself as a vital figure in Unai Emery’s plans this season, with 39 of his 40 appearances coming as a starter.

Despite the arrival of big names like Marcus Rashford, Donyell Malen, and Marco Asensio, he has maintained his place in the starting XI.

His consistent form has been crucial to Aston Villa’s push for European qualification, with the side currently sitting 7th in the Premier League table. With a Champions League clash against Club Brugge looming on 12 March, Rogers will be key as the side looks to defend a 3-1 advantage from the first leg.
