‘Morgan Rogers set to be axed’ at Aston Villa as Man City and Chelsea swoop

Aston Villa could be forced to sell yet more stars this summer to comply with strict Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) – despite their strong showing this term.

Football Insider revealed on 6 May that Aston Villa will do everything they can to keep star man Morgan Rogers amid new interest from Chelsea – with Man City also keen to bring him back to the Etihad Stadium.

Unai Emery is desperate to keep hold of Rogers but Villa acknowledge they will have to accept offers that are too good to turn down.

The Young Player of the Season nominee, 22, only signed a contract extension in November 2024 – with his new deal set to run until June 2030.

But Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted that the England international is the most valuable player in Emery’s squad.

Aston Villa fans ‘will accept’ Rogers departure, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness conceded the fans will “hate to see” Rogers go – but expects them to “accept” his departure as inevitable.

The attacking midfielder has notched 14 goals and 14 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions this season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The fans will accept the situation, even though it may be a fan favourite like Morgan Rogers who has to go.

“That’s where the money is in this Villa squad.

“Everyone would hate to see him go because he’s a real talent, and they’ll avoid it as best they can – but it’s the bigger picture.

“When you look at where the maximum value can come from in terms of then strengthening the squad, it’s Rogers who may end up getting the axe.”

Aston Villa ready to sell Bailey

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (30 April) that Aston Villa plan to accept offers for winger Leon Bailey this summer.

Emery is keen to offload Bailey, 27, and bring in a new wide forward capable of providing more cutting edge.

He has just two goals and four assists in 37 appearances across all competitions this season.
