‘Morgan Rogers will be the face of Tottenham’ – fans react to journalist’s update

Tottenham are being pushed to agree a deal for Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers after being hijacked by rivals Arsenal in the race for Eberechi Eze.

Tottenham have been active in the summer market, securing the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha and Mathys Tel to strengthen Thomas Frank’s squad.

But the plan took a major setback when James Maddison suffered an ACL injury in pre-season, forcing the club to accelerate their search for an attacking midfielder and made a move for Eze to fill that gap.

Even though Spurs reaching an agreement on personal terms with the Crystal Palace man, their North London rivals Arsenal swooped in at the last moment for Eze, hijacking the deal and reaching an agreement, who is now expected to undergo a medical.

The collapse of that move initially left Spurs supporters frustrated, but news of a potential alternative target has lifted spirits.

Tottenham make Morgan Rogers priority target

Miguel Delaney of The Independent reported on X on 21 August that “Spurs have contacted intermediaries” about Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, who has now emerged as their “priority” target.

He added that while Villa “don’t want to sell”, the club’s financial situation could leave them vulnerable to a significant bid before the window closes.

Interest in Rogers is hardly surprising. The 23-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season under Unai Emery last term, where his standout performances saw Rogers named PFA Young Player of the Year. His rise has not gone unnoticed, with both Chelsea and Manchester City also monitoring his progress.

Football Insider revealed that Villa are determined to keep hold of Rogers, viewing him as central to Emery’s long-term plans. However, with Tottenham pushing to reinforce their attack, they may test Villa’s resolve.

Since arriving at Villa Park in January 2024, Rogers has delivered an outstanding 34 goal contributions in all competitions, which underline why he has quickly become one of the most in-demand young players in the Premier League.

Tottenham fans react after Eze deal hijacked

Spurs had looked set to secure Crystal Palace star Eze earlier this week, only for Arsenal to swoop in and hijack the deal at the final stage, forcing the club to turn their full attention towards alternatives.

It was not the first time this summer that Spurs have missed out on a key target. Earlier in the window, Morgan Gibbs-White signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest after owner Evangelos Marinakis threatened legal action over Tottenham’s approach.

Despite the frustrations, the prospect of landing Rogers has reignited optimism among fans. Many supporters have taken to social media to urge the club to do whatever it takes to complete the signing, with one writing: “Rogers would be a better signing than Eze” while another added: “Whatever Villa demand we have to pay.”
