Moyes tipped to unleash 'future stars' after 'big' West Ham development - pundit

Noel Whelan has urged West Ham boss David Moyes to blood a number of promising youngsters in their Europa League dead rubber against Dinamo Zagreb.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it is “critical” that “future stars” are given the opportunity to “test their mettle”.

As per Knees Up Mother Brown (6 December), West Ham have given a clear indication that their side to face Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday (9 December) will be more youthful than ever.

The report details how U23 squad members Ajibola Alese, Jamal Baptiste, Harrison Ashby, and Emmanuel Longelo were all missing as West Ham’s U23s took on Crystal Palace yesterday.

Sonny Perkins, who made his senior debut as West Ham beat Rapid Vienna last month (25 November), also missed the match.

Whelan insisted it is a “no-brainer” to give these youngsters an opportunity on the senior stage.

“When you’re in that comfort zone in the group stage you can afford to do that,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“It allows you to see some of the better youngsters you’ve got coming through the pathway, and it will help everyone at the club see if those young players can cut it in the first team.

“It’s a no-brainer, they’ve absolutely got to put these youngsters in the side and see if they can handle it. They have a good set-up at West Ham, so it’ll be interesting to see what they’ve got coming through.

“It’s critical that they give these future stars that opportunity to test their mettle, and I think there’s been a big clue already [on Monday].”

West Ham secured top spot in a Europa League group which includes Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, and Rapid Vienna last month.

The Hammers sit fourth in the Premier League.
