Graeme Murty: This is how Rangers cup win allays a few fears for players

Rangers manager Graeme Murty believes Sunday’s 6-1 Scottish Cup demolition of Ayr United “allays a few fears” for his players after turning their domination of the game into a heavily one-sided scoreline.
The Gers have struggled in the past to turn their possession into goals but hit the net five times in a marauding second-half performance at blizzard-hit Somerset Park on Sunday.
Despite going a goal behind after Wes Foderingham’s monumental howler, doubles from Alfredo Morelos and Josh Windass added to strikes from Jason Cummings and Jamie Murphy booked the Gers’ place in the quarter-final draw.
Murty believes his side showed “good patience and character” to turn the game around before blitzing United in the second-half.
“I thought we showed good patience and character. Those are the things, allied to the weather and the crowd, that can make you freeze as a footballer, make you push a little too hard. But we kept our discipline and composure well,” Murty said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“We scored the goals when we needed to score them. We’ve had games previously when we haven’t scored when we’ve been on top. We managed to do that today which allays a few fears for the players.”
The Light Blues were rewarded with a home tie with Championship side Falkirk in the last-eight which should give Murty’s side the best possible chance to reach the semi-final and a date at Hampden.
The Gers last lifted the Scottish Cup in 2009 when Nacho Novo scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Falkirk.
Gers fans will be desperate to see their side lift the trophy after not seeing their side lift any major silverware since 2011 following their financial meltdown the following year which forced them to have to work their way back up through the leagues.
