Myles Lewis-Skelly reacts to Viktor Gyokeres announcement as Arsenal near deal

Arsenal are finally ready to announce Viktor Gyokeres as their latest signing, and the news appears to have gone down well with his new teammates.

The Gunners have finished second in each of the last three Premier League seasons, being outscored by the eventual champions on every occasion.

With that in mind, a No.9 has been the top priority this summer and after links to the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins, Gyokeres emerged as the top target.

After some drawn-out negotiations, it looks like Arsenal have finally got a deal over the line, with Fabrizio Romano giving it his customary ‘here we go’ seal of approval.

Gyokeres registered a stunning 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 appearances across all competitions for Sporting CP, helping them to two Primeira Liga titles and a Taca de Portugal.

And while the Premier League will be a huge step up for the former Coventry City man, he clearly has the potential to upgrade the Gunners from bridesmaids to champions.

That seems to be the consensus among the Arsenal squad, with a video emerging on social media of Myles Lewis-Skelly appearing to react to Romano’s announcement.

The young left back looks very happy with the imminent arrival of Gyokeres and is seen mimicking the Sweden international’s trademark celebration.

Gyokeres has questions to answer, but is no top-level rookie

Football Insider verdict

One of the understandable question marks surrounding Arsenal’s capture of Gyokeres is his lack of experience in a top-five league.

The 27-year-old only made eight senior appearances during his time with Brighton between 2018 and 2021, with all of them coming in cup competitions.

However, Gyokeres is hardly a striker without top-level experience.

The Stockholm-born poacher has played 17 times in the Champions League and Europa League combined since joining Sporting — doing so to great success, notching 11 goals and two assists.

What’s more, he’s proven he can deal with the rigours of English football, netting 43 goals in 116 games for Coventry — including 21 strikes during the 2022/23 Championship season as the Sky Blues reached the playoff final and came agonisingly close to a long-awaited Premier League return.

The proof will be in the pudding with Gyokeres, who will have to let the goals do the talking.

However, Arsenal have done their homework and know they’re getting a striker full of confidence and, on paper, with all the tools required to help them turn silver into gold.
