Naby Keita in talks to join club after Sunderland offer – journalist

Naby Keita is in talks to join Istanbul Basaksehir before the Turkish transfer window closes on 14 September.

The former Liverpool midfielder had joined Werder Bremen after leaving the Premier League, but he made just five appearances in all competitions last season.

The 29-year-old refused to travel with the team for their fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, which led to him being fined.

Keita is now keen to depart the club before spending another season in exile, and as many transfer windows have either closed or are about to, he’s running out of options.

Sunderland had been interested in signing him, but the Championship side were unable to agree terms with the Guinea international.

Guardian journalist Ed Aarons has now reported that Keita is in negotiations with Istanbul Basaksehir.

Keita is currently under contract at Werder Bremen until 2026.

Naby Keita will see Istanbul Basaksehir as a fresh start

It has been a difficult 12 months for Keita due to the lack of playing time he has received with the German outfit.

The midfielder had originally joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer, but the move has proven to be a negative one for all parties involved.

He does boast plenty of experience after playing at the highest level across Europe, which he now wants to take to Turkey.

Keita has made 310 appearances throughout his career having played in England, Germany, France, and Austria.

He has scored 52 goals and provided 42 assists across those performances and has the ability to play in numerous positions within the midfield.
