Nassef Sawiris hit by Aston Villa blow – Stefan Borson
Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris faces an uphill battle trying to scrap the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) after Premier League clubs have complied with them since 2013.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Villa have consistency in challenging the PSR rules after voting against them when they came into force more than a decade ago.
The Telegraph reported Sawiris has warned the West Midlands giants could take legal action against the Premier League’s financial rules.
Villa proposed the allowable loss limit should be increased from £105million to £135million for the 2024-25 season, but Premier League clubs voted against the suggestion.
The club are currently toeing the PSR line and need to sell players before 30 June to avoid a possible breach and a potential points deduction.
Football Insider revealed on 7 June Villa must raise £60million in player sales after their PSR proposal was rejected.
Aston Villa to face battle over PSR issues
Borson believes Sawiris could struggle to bring an end to the rules after they have been in place for more than a decade.
“I think he’s focusing more on the PSR regime itself as opposed to the APT regime,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The problem he’s got is that the PSR rules have been in place since 2013.
“It’s interesting that Villa were actually one of the six clubs that voted against PSR coming in back in 2013.

“Villa do at least have consistency in voting against the PSR rules.
“The problem he’s got is everybody has complied with the PSR rules for a decade.”
