Nathaniel Clyne is poised to undergo a Liverpool medical within 24 hours, Football Insider sources understand.
Clyne is on the verge of completing a move to the Merseyside club after Southampton accepted an improved bid for the right-back.
The two clubs have agreed a fee worth £13million for the England international after Liverpool’s initial £10million offer was rejected last month.
Football Insider revealed that Liverpool had tabled a second bid for Clyne and were confident it would be enough to prise him from St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton have reluctantly agreed to sell the defender, who is out of contract in a year’s time and rejected a series of attempts from the Saints to tie him to an extended deal.
Clyne will become the sixth summer signing for Brendan Rodgers and is poised for a medical in the next 24 hours. He follows in the footsteps of James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmono in what has been a busy start to the transfer window for Liverpool.
Javier Manquillo failed to impress during the first season of a two-year loan from Atletico Madrid, while Emre Can was tested out in the position towards the end of the campaign but did not look suited to the role.
Clyne had a fine season for Southampton and was awarded with his first England caps as he was installed as Roy Hodgson’s first choice at right-back ahead of Johnson and Kyle Walker.
However, he was surprisingly overlooked for the European Championship qualifier against Slovenia earlier this month, only appearing as a late substitute.
