'Needs to have a word with himself' - Sky pundit destroys Rangers big-name player as stupid

By Richard Parks

Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan has laid into Lee Wallace for putting Rangers before his family by playing for the club in Scotland’s fourth tier.

The suspended Ibrox skipper has been hailed in some quarters as an epitome of loyalty for standing by the Glasgow giants even when they were demoted to Scottish League Two in 2012.

But ex-Celtic midfielder Provan claimed Wallace was dumb rather than loyal and claimed he should have done what was best for his career and those closest to him.

“We’re reminded Wallace stuck with the club in its darkest hour,” wrote Provan in the Scottish Sun on Sunday. “When he could have ripped up his contract, he chose to stick with the Charles Green circus playing in League Two.

“That wasn’t loyalty, it was stupidity. Anyone who puts a football club before the security of their family needs to have a word with himself.”

Wallace was suspended at the start of this week along with Kenny Miller after questioning Graeme Murty’s methods in the Hampden dressing room in the immediate aftermath of the 4-0 defeat last weekend.

Football Insider verdict:

Wallace is popular among many Rangers fans for standing by the club in their darkest hour following demotion to the fourth tier of Scottish football in 2012. But Provan has taken the professional’s stance by insisting the left-back should have done what was best for himself and his career. He has a point. The Scotland international was way too good to be wasting his peak years steamrollering weak teams in the lower leagues. Instead, he should have been maximising the ability that has made him a key player for the club for the last seven years. Wallace was wrong to confront Murty when he wasn’t even playing, and he was also dumb to have played way below his level for so long.
