Kevin Phillips has claimed Cardiff City will target Illan Meslier this afternoon as Leeds United prepare to make their Championship return.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland and West Brom striker insisted that Neil Harris would be telling his players to put pressure on the 20-year-old from set pieces and crosses.

Meslier has made just three appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season following his loan move from FC Lorient last summer.

He has started the last two Championship matches after first-choice goalkeeper, Kiko Casilla, was suspended for eight games for racist abuse.

Cardiff are a physical side with Aden Flint, Callum Paterson and Robert Glatzel all posing a significant aerial threat.

When asked by Football Insider if he expected the Bluebirds to target the inexperienced keeper, Phillips said: “It will be a big test.

“As a manager and as a coach I have had this conversation many times. When an unexperienced goalkeeper comes in or the number two comes in and you have got a physical team – put him under pressure.

“Get crosses in the box, put him under pressure at set plays and see what he is made of. I am sure Neil Harris will be looking at it from that point of view.

“It is a good opportunity for Meslier to show what he is made of.

“There will not be any pressure from any supporters so there is no excuse for him to go and put in a good performance.

“If he comes out of this having performed well it will be a great boost for the manager going forward because Casilla won’t be available.”
