Newcastle backed to complete Marc Guehi deal after confession – pundit

Newcastle United should sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi in January after failing to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland international Frank McAvennie believes the 24-year-old should remain a priority target for Newcastle after they saw four bids rejected for the central defender.

Eddie Howe’s side failed to meet Palace’s £70million valuation of the England international but a deal could still be possible after Steve Parish admitted he ‘wants to sell’ to Newcastle.

Guehi has started and finished all of Palace’s four games so far this season as his side sit 16th in the Premier League, still looking for their first win of the campaign.

Newcastle will go back in for Marc Guehi

Newcastle centre-backs Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles fell victim to football’s ACL injury epidemic at the back end of last season and won’t be returning to action until the new year.

Free agent Lloyd Kelly was the only first-team defender brought into the club in the summer transfer window although he primarily plays as a left-back.

“I think they’ll be going for him again in January”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Crystal Palace have a figure, they didn’t match it but they might be able to get him in January.

“The thing is, if the guy plays well between now and January they might not get a chance.

“I do think they need reinforcements for their defence, they’re playing that many games, if they get any injuries that will put them down a bit.

“All going well, they stick to the plan, no one gets injured and Newcastle will be alright.”
