Newcastle backed to seal 'big' appointment after Jim White update - pundit

Newcastle United should appoint a relegation specialist until the end of the season, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant it would be a risk to appoint a high-profile foreign manager given the Magpies current predicament.

Newcastle confirmed Steve Bruce had left the club by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Graeme Jones is in temporary charge until a successor is found.

Speaking on talkSPORT (October 21st), Jim White claimed the next appointment will only be on a temporary basis.

He understands Bruce’s replacement will be an English manager with Premier League experience to try and ensure safety.

When asked by Football Insider if this was the right route to take, Phillips said: “This is a big decision.

“If they get a high-profile foreign manager in who doesn’t have Premier League experience, they could go down. It would be tough.

“There is an argument for both but I think it is sensible to get an English manager with experience.

“From a business point of view, they cannot afford to drop out of the Premier League.

“I think it would be best for them to bring in someone with that experience of keeping teams in the Premier League. Not that there is any guarantees. It would be the most sensible thing to do.

“The new owners will only have one priority right now and that will be to stay in the Premier League.”
