‘Newcastle boss Eddie Howe would take England job’ – ‘Crazy’ update
Eddie Howe would not be able to turn down the opportunity of coaching England despite his hero status at Newcastle, Harry Redknapp believes.
The 47-year-old was one of the figures in the conversation to succeed Gareth Southgate following his decision to step down from the Three Lions job, though Howe has revealed he was not approached by the FA.
Despite this, the Newcastle man has already been tipped to replace Thomas Tuchel once the German’s 18-month contract comes to an end, and the majority of fans outside St James’ Park are excited.
Thanks to the former Bournemouth boss, the Magpies have broken their 70-year drought for silverware after defeating Arne Slot’s Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday 16 March.
After lifting the trophy, Redknapp has voiced his surprise about the fact Howe was not approached for the vacant England job but believes he would jump at the chance if it had been put in front of him.
England’s miss is Newcastle United’s plus
Speaking on talkSPORT [18 March], Redknapp said: “It’s silly, isn’t it? I thought maybe Eddie just didn’t fancy it – he’s at a great club. But he would have taken it. No one can turn the England job down.
“He should have been nailed on for the job – it’s crazy that he didn’t get it. Have you got to win a cup to prove you can manage England? It’s so silly… I want to see an English manager and he’s the man for the job.”
Eddie Howe needs lifetime offer to prize him from St James Park
Football Insider verdict
Howe is in the process of building something incredible at St James’ Park, earning the trust of all supporters at the club, with Newcastle hoping to keep Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimares this summer.
If the manager has any dreams of one day representing his country, having ended his career due to injuries at 29 years of age, it could be simple to draw him away from the Magpies.
However, Newcastle are incredibly close to securing Champions League football for next season, and with one piece of silverware claimed, there is no reason why Howe cannot lead the club even further.
Premier League standings | Points |
4. Chelsea | 49 |
5. Man City | 48 |
6. Newcastle | 47 |
7. Brighton | 47 |
8. Fulham | 45 |
9. Aston Villa | 45 |
While Man United, Aston Villa, Brighton, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton all represent hurdles in the coming weeks, the Magpies have just beaten one of the best teams in the world, one that is about to lift the Premier League title.
Howe certainly could be England’s manager in a few years, but given that a new era is just beginning at St James’ Park, the ship might have sailed for the Three Lions to secure his signature in the not-too-distant future.
