Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is being targeted by two-time La Liga title-winners Real Sociedad in what is being touted as a homecoming of the 57-year-old, according to a report.
The Mirror has revealed that with the Spanish club currently struggling in the league, in 15th place, the Basque club see the Magpies boss at the man to resolve their form going forward.
It is also reported that the interest of Sociedad could give Benitez an advantage going into the summer’s transfer market, knowing that interest from abroad could force club owner Mike Ashley to loosen the purse-strings.
Benitez has overseen one relegation and one promotion since taking charge at St James’ in March 2016, as well as guiding the Tyneside outfit clear of danger this season.
Football Insider verdict:
All the talk of an exit from Benitez has quietened down and his position at the helm seems to have steadied. The Spaniard is happy with life in the North-East and enjoys the competitive nature of the Premier League – it’s questionable as to whether he would get that in La Liga. But, undoubtedly, the lure of a return to his homeland will give him food for thought. We think that he will stay, at least for another season. Benitez will want to push Newcastle forward, so he will take the summer window to see what funds are given to him and take it from there.
