Newcastle ‘close to the wind’ in terms of points deduction – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle United will “definitely” vote in favour of an increase in allowed losses under Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed a change would allow the Magpies to avoid a potential points deduction and also benefit from “spending freedom” in the transfer market.

Top-flight clubs will vote on potentially increasing permitted losses under PSR from £105million to £135million over three years in a proposal put forward by Aston Villa for this week’s Premier League AGM.

Crystal Palace have also proposed a rule change to increase the losses allowed under PSR for clubs competing in Europe to counteract Uefa’s coefficient system.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were deducted eight and four points respectively for rule breaches in the 2023-24 campaign – but neither side paid with their Premier League status.

Newcastle ‘close to the wind’ as Wyness drops new PSR claim

Wyness claimed Newcastle are “getting close to the wind” in terms of breaching the rules and will therefore vote for a change.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They will definitely want an increase in the allowed breach.

“Newcastle are another club getting close to the wind in terms of PSR requirements.

“They’ll vote for the increase because their ownership will be able to fund more transfer business.

“Part of the longer-term plan for Newcastle is to have as much spending freedom as possible.

“I don’t see any reason they shouldn’t have that freedom. They’ve got an exciting team who can push on.”
