Newcastle ‘confident’ about Fabian Schar agreement – O’Rourke

Newcastle United are “confident” defender Fabian Schar will sign another contract extension at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (10 February) that the Magpies are set to step up contract talks with Schar – whose current deal is up in June.

It is believed there is a willingness from all parties to find an agreement despite the 33-year-old being able to negotiate a pre-contract deal with foreign sides.

Schar is entering his twilight years so a long-term deal is unlikely but the Switzerland international could be offered a 12 or 24-month extension by Newcastle.

He remains happy at St James’ Park as he is still a key member of Eddie Howe‘s squad.

The centre-back penned a 12-month extension last year (2024) but now finds himself out of contract once again in a matter of months.

He has made 24 starts in 26 appearances across all competitions this term, notching four goals and one assist.

Schar has made 214 Newcastle appearances since arriving from Deportivo La Coruna in July 2018.

Newcastle plot move for Liverpool star

Away from contract talks, Newcastle are also putting plans in place for a bumper summer window after failing to bring in a new face in January.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (10 February) that Newcastle and Chelsea are eyeing Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher ahead of a potential summer move.

The Republic of Ireland international will push for a Liverpool exit in the off-season, when he will have just 12 months remaining on his Anfield contract.

Newcastle, who sit sixth in the Premier League table and are in the League Cup final, have struggled for a settled presence in goal this season.
