Newcastle ‘confident’ of agreeing Marc Guehi deal – sources

Newcastle United remain “confident” of landing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi before Friday’s (30 August) transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

That is despite a major twist at Selhurst Park in recent days, with Joachim Andersen sold to Fulham for a reported £30million.

Guehi joining Newcastle would complete the dismantling of Palace’s first-choice defensive partnership, but the Magpies are nevertheless optimistic about their chances.

Sources at Newcastle say the two sides remain locked in a game of brinkmanship over the final fee paid for the England international.

Palace are holding out for £70million and Newcastle are not far away from meeting that valuation late on in the summer window.

The Croydon club are continuing to plan for life with and without their captain, who has started the first two games of the new campaign.

Guehi boosted his value with a string of stellar performances for beaten finalists England at Euro 2024.

He is under contract at Selhurst Park until June 2026 after joining from Chelsea three years ago.

The 24-year-old played 29 times across all competitions at club level last term, captaining Palace when he was fit.

Newcastle are yet to complete a high-profile signing this summer, with Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, William Osula and Lloyd Kelly all arriving at St James’ Park during the off-season.
