Newcastle could have to pay Marc Guehi release clause as talks opening – sources

Liverpool and Newcastle United are likely to have to pay a release clause to land Marc Guehi if he pens a new Crystal Palace deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (2 September) that Palace will soon open contract talks with Guehi after the close of the transfer window.

It is believed that attention will now turn to future planning at Selhurst Park after the close of the summer transfer window on Friday (30 August).

Liverpool and Newcastle are both keen on Guehi – with the Magpies launching a bid of around £70million in the summer window, which was rejected.

Any buyout clause is likely to be set above that valuation and will dictate the structure of payments in any potential deal.

The England international’s current Palace deal only runs until June 2026 and the Croydon club are keen to tie him down longer-term.

However, sources say the defender and his representatives will insist on a release clause being included in any potential new contract.

Michael Olise had a buyout clause in his last Palace contract – which was activated by Bayern Munich at the start of the summer window.

Guehi, who is the club captain at Selhurst Park, has started and played 90 minutes in all four of Palace’s games so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

He boosted his value in the last year after becoming a regular with England and played all but one game at Euro 2024.
