Newcastle could land ‘huge’ financial boost after sensational twist – Borson

Newcastle United qualifying for the Champions League this season would make a “huge” difference to their financial situation.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Tyneside club missed out on earning significant prize money from the competition last season after making around £35million.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League in 2022-23 following their fourth-place finish in the Premier League, but they were knocked out in the group stages last season.

The north-east giants missed out on European qualification for this campaign after their seventh-place finish in 2023-24 didn’t prove to be enough.

But Eddie Howe’s side are currently in contention for a Champions League spot again, having won five Premier League games in a row to take them up to fifth in the table.

Newcastle’s Saudi-backed ownership have struggled to make their substantial wealth pay on the pitch since taking over in 2021 after the Premier League’s financial rules have restricted the influx of cash at St James’ Park.

Newcastle could strengthen PSR situation with Champions League qualification

But Borson insisted the club’s financial situation could change if they were able to qualify for the Champions League this season.

He told Football Insider: “It’s going to make a huge difference if they can get Champions League.

“They sort of missed out a bit last season. We will see it when the numbers come out for last season. But in their 2022-23 accounts, they already said that it was going to be worth about £35million in total for the Champions League.

“That’s a lot less than they probably expected. That’s because they went out in the group stages. But now you have got the bigger group stage.

“You have got the probability for all of the Premier League teams that they get the extra two knockout games at least in the Champions League. There are more games if they qualify and there is bigger prize money anyway.

“You can easily be looking at £100million if you can get through to the round of 16 or the quarters. That makes a huge difference.

“If they can do that and they can do it for a couple of seasons, then those sorts of issues that they have got because of PSR start to diminish.

“The other thing that nobody is yet really going deep on because we don’t have the numbers of exactly what the new rules look like, but PSR is going at the end of this season and is going to be replaced by a new regime.

“It will be an advantage for certain clubs. It is going to change it and make it easier for them to comply.

“We will have to see what it looks like before we make those comments, but people do forget that PSR in its current form is going at the end of the season.”
