Newcastle could sell star to avoid shattering PSR blow – Stefan Borson
Newcastle United could be forced to sell a player to avoid breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for this season.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Tyneside club will likely have to make some kind of profit before the end of the campaign.
Newcastle have struggled to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) secured its £305million takeover in October 2021, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
The north-east giants were forced to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton before last year’s 30 June accounting deadline to avoid a spending breach for 2023-24.
Football Insider revealed on 8 January Newcastle’s overall revenue likely surpassed £300million for the first time in 2023-24 – marking a significant increase on the £250.3million they posted in 2022-23.
Eddie Howe’s side currently sit fifth in the Premier League table after 20 games.
Newcastle are facing challenging situation after PSR issues
Borson admitted Newcastle could be on course to finish significantly higher than they budgeted for if they qualify for the Champions League this season.
He told Football Insider: “This current season they are going to lose the £37million that they quoted for last season’s Champions League, and that is all going.
“They will do well for the current season to get back up to the levels of last season from a revenue perspective.
“Although some of the costs will have come down like the wage bill, some of the other costs like player amortisation will have gone up.
“I still think they have got a very challenging situation.

“They can do deals in January, but they will probably still have to sell a player or make some kind of profit between now and the end of the season.
“They could also finish materially higher than they have probably budgeted for, which is now possible because they now look like they could quite possibly finish in the top five.”
