Newcastle could sell top stars after points deduction warning – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned it will be hard for Newcastle United to spend big moving forward without “trading” some of their top assets.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested it could be hard to keep the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon while the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) remain in place.
All three Newcastle stars were linked with potential exits in the summer window as Eddie Howe’s side came close to breaching PSR.
The Magpies managed to keep the trio at St James’ Park but could not spend big on their top targets – missing out on Marc Guehi in the last throes of the transfer window.
Newcastle have started the new season with 10 points from a possible 12 as they seek a return to European football in the 2025-26 campaign.
Newcastle could trade in top assets next year, says Wyness
Wyness claimed he expects the Tyneside club to be “calculated” in their transfer dealings going forward.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They were very careful about PSR, they did a good job.
“Newcastle have now got a level of squad where you can start to do some trading.
“They’ve got some assets to help them move forward.
“There could be quite a bit of movement and reshaping of this Newcastle squad.

“Until the PSR situation is changed, it’s going to be very hard to splash out without bringing anything in. They’ve still got those issues to resolve.
“I think it will be more of a player trading situation, rather than just spending. It’ll be a calculated move.”
