Newcastle fans can’t believe they’ve signed ‘phenomenal talent’ after Union Saint-Gilloise masterclass
Newcastle United cantered to their first victory of the new Champions League campaign against Union Saint-Gilloise (USG).
Newcastle lost to Barcelona in their Champions League opener, but Eddie Howe’s men improved to see off Belgian side USG.
Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Newcastle came in agonisingly late fashion on Sunday, but Howe’s men regrouped to get the job done in Belgium.
Sandro Tonali caught the eye of Steve Sidwell on TNT Sports after his showing against USG, and the Italian set up Nick Woltemade for Newcastle’s opener.

Newcastle fans adore Nick Woltemade after Union Saint-Gilloise showing
Woltemade has now scored three goals in four Newcastle appearances since moving to Tyneside from VfB Stuttgart in the summer.
Newcastle fans have clamoured to social media to give their verdict on the German striker’s impact at the Toon.
One fan said: “I liked Woltemade for a long time and I was dreaming when I was saying I’d love to see him in the black and white. For us to then sign him and for him to perform at the levels he has, I’m over the moon. What a player.”
Another compared Woltemade to a club legend, saying: “Woltemade may very well be the best ST to hold the ball up we’ve had since shearer. Hes class.”
“A superb performance from all especially from Woltemade he is just a phenomenal talent genuinely outstanding in all areas,” someone else commented, while another wrote: “Woltemade is special. Looks like it’s all so effortless for him.”
Meanwhile, another Newcastle fan replied: “Woltemade is some player, mind. He’s knitting our attacks together brilliantly.”
“Three goals in six games for Woltemade, Premier League & Champions League, link-up play looks amazing, aerial threat is boisterous. But they labelled him as a flop… Newcastle have bought a diamond,” one fan said.
Newcastle’s summer business is paying off, and Yoane Wissa hasn’t played yet
Newcastle had a torrid start to the transfer window, seeing numerous targets turn down their advances in the first two months of the summer.
However, Howe’s side turned it around and recruited some good talent that increased the quality of Newcastle’s depth.
Nick Woltemade’s goalscoring record | Goals | Team | League |
2019-20 | 0 | Werder Bremen | Bundesliga |
2020-21 | 0 | Werder Bremen | Bundesliga |
2021-22 | 0 | Werder Bremen | 2. Bundesliga |
2022-23 | 10 | Elversberg | 3. Liga |
2023-24 | 2 | Werder Bremen | Bundesliga |
2024-25 | 12 | Stuttgart | Bundesliga |
2025-26 | 2 | Newcastle United | Premier League |
Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, and Woltemade all joined before Yoane Wissa completed a move on deadline day.
Wissa is out injured currently, but adding his capabilities to score 19 Premier League goals, as he showed in the 2024-25 season, to this attack will boost Howe’s confidence.
Newcastle have started the season poorly, but the early signs for Eddie Howe are encouraging, as their patience in the transfer window looks to be paying off.
