Newcastle fans: Eddie Howe ‘is gone’ as Paul Mitchell shares England news

Newcastle United fans are expecting Eddie Howe to leave the club and take over as England boss after what Paul Mitchell said.

The sporting director, appointed earlier this summer, hinted in a new interview that the door for Howe’s exit would not be closed should he be offered the international job.

Since Gareth Southgate stepped down following a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, speculation has been rife about who would take over the role.

Former under-21s boss Lee Carsley has taken interim charge of the Three Lions and will lead them in the upcoming games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

However, Howe has been and remains one of the most heavily tipped options for the job, with many expecting him to leave Newcastle should the offer arrive.

After Southgate’s exit in July, Newcastle fans feared his head could be turned by the prospect of managing his country and expected him to be one of the top options to take over.

Howe has previously suggested he would prefer not to walk away from day-to-day club management, and his project at St James’ Park has not reached its conclusion.

However, he has also admitted in the past that he would find it difficult to turn down the opportunity to manage his country.

After Mitchell appeared to hint that an exit is still on the cards, fans have gathered on social media to insist it could happen sooner rather than later.

Some even suggested that a deal may already have been reached.
