Newcastle fans were left fuming on social media with the display of midfielder star Jonjo Shelvey after his role in the 3-0 defeat to Watford at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Goals from Will Hughes and Andre Gray sandwiched an own goal from the Magpies’ own DeAndre Yedlin, and condemned Rafael Benitez and his men to their fourth successive defeat, having been beaten by Burnley, Bournemouth and Manchester United previously.
It also sees them slip further down the table into 13th, having started the weekend in 11th place, and are now just four points off West Ham, who sit in 18th and therefore in the relegation zone.
However it was the display of acting captain Shelvey, handed the armband in the absence of centre back Jamaal Lascelles through injury, which caught the eye of the Toon Army for the wrong reasons, as they took to Twitter to berate the midfield maestro’s contribution.
Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:
Shelvey leave please

All shelvey does is punt the ball up field. Infective. He's done nothing today. Lazy player.

jonjo shelvey needs to have a good hard look at himself after this performance, absolute polar opposite of Lascelles’ application to the armband

Shelvey should never go near the armband ever again. #NUFC

Different team with lascelles dummet mitro n merino in though. It isnt working partly because diame n joselu r poor players and shelvey isnt a leader

The former Liverpool man has made 10 league appearances for the club this season but is yet to find the back of the net or even contribute an assist for his team mates.
He will be hoping to improve on his display when the Magpies travel to the Hawthorns to take on a managerless West Brom side, with temporary boss Gary Megson guiding the players to a 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Saturday.
In other Newcastle United news, Benitez has delivered a positive statement on the future with takeover talks surrounding the club.
