Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to slaughter the performance of star striker Islam Slimani after he came off the bench in the 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Brom.

The Magpies knew that just one point was needed to mathematically secure their Premier League safety while the Baggies needed three points just to stay in with a shout of staying up, knowing that victory still would not be enough to lift them off the bottom of the table.

However, despite the gap in league position, it was the visitors who took the lead, and the three points, thanks to Matt Phillips’ goal just before the half hour mark, latching on to a good ball from Jake Livermore which dissected the Newcastle defence.

With defeat edging closer, manager Rafael Benitez threw Slimani on with just under half an hour to play but the Algerian, making just his fourth appearance since joining from Leicester City in January, had little impact up front.

Instead he was the centre of a flash point in the West Brom box, appearing to lash out and kick the legs of Craig Dawson after an altercation, an incident apparently missed by the officials and therefore potentially being subject to a three game ban.

Newcastle fans were fuming on Twitter with his contribution, with many believing that they have seen the last of the 29-year-old.
