'Comical' - Newcastle fans troll Sunderland as manager reportedly emerges as No 1 contender

By Danny Wright

Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to troll Sunderland after it was reported that Paul Heckingbottom had become their number one choice to become the new Stadium of Light manager.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie claimed on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday that while the Black Cats have not made an approach for the Barnsley manager, they see him as a “leading contender” in the hunt to replace Simon Grayson.

Grayson was sacked by the Sunderland board last month with the Wearside club seemingly in freefall after their relegation from the Premier League last term.

The Black Cats are currently rock bottom of the Championship table, three points from safety and even below Bolton, who are newly promoted and have themselves had an awful start to the campaign.

Newcastle fans have clearly reveled in the downfall of their bitter Tyne/Wear rivals, and many have taken to Twitter to poke fun at them after it emerged that Heckingbottom was likely to be their next manager.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Newcastle effectively replaced Sunderland in the Premier League when they earned promotion by winning the Championship title while David Moyes oversaw their relegation.

It seems like back-to-back drops are certainly on the cards at the Stadium of Light, but it remains to be seen whether Heckingbottom could be that man to save them.

In other Newcastle United news, this Magpies attacker has made a blunt admission about where he does not want to be anymore.
