Newcastle United are looking to offload goalkeeper Tim Krul and are eyeing a potential swap deal with PSV Eindhoven for their stopper Jeroen Zoet, according to a recent report.
The Chronicle has revealed that Rafa Benitez is hoping to secure the 26-year-old keeper in return for their stopper in addition to a cash sum over the closing days of the transfer window.
The newspaper claims that there are a number of names in the mix at St. James’ Park as the club is focused on shipping Krul out and bringing a new goalkeeper in.
It is understood that the Magpies boss is interested in looking into signing Wayne Hennessey from Crystal Palace, while Benitez still remains fond of former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina and could eye a reunion.
The Toon boss was offered Lukas Skorupski last week, but the manager was reluctant to agree because of their valuation of the keeper.
By waving goodbye to Krul it would relieve a large amount of money off the club’s wage bill which will be a massive boost for the Magpies in the closing days of the window.
The 29-year-old moved up from the Newcastle Under 23s back in 2008 and has since featured in 185 games for the Magpies where he kept 53 clean sheets.
However, Krul has been out on a number of loan spells with clubs such as Carlisle, Ajax and most recently AZ Alkmaar.
Since returning from his most recent loan the Dutch keeper has failed to make a single appearance for the Magpies, with Benitez opting for Rob Elliot in goal during the club’s past three Premier League matches.
Football Insider verdict
Focusing on securing a new keeper is incredibly important as the window draws to a close. However, Benitez will have to be quick as if he fails to complete a move for Krul and he ends up staying for another season he will know that he’s unwanted and could leave the Dutchman feeling deflated and demotivated. While recruiting Zoet would be a good signing for the club, it is imperative that the club signs someone with proven Premier League experience and Pepe Reina would provide that. The former Liverpool keeper knows Benitez well and has the maturity and leadership skills to keep the Magpies in the top flight for another season.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the club are considering a late swoop for a Premier League rival’s keeper.
