Newcastle ‘furious’ after Liverpool League Cup final ticket controversy – boardroom source

Newcastle are locked in a battle for Champions League qualification this term but fans could be forgiven for excitedly looking towards next month’s League Cup final date with Liverpool.

The Magpies’ ticket sales for the Wembley showpiece are set to conclude in the coming days ahead of the big game on 16 March.

Eddie Howe’s side beat Nottingham Forest, Wimbledon, Chelsea, Brentford and Arsenal to set up the clash with Liverpool – and will be hoping to right the wrongs of 2023’s 2-0 final defeat against Man United.

But Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted the club are “furious” after a new ticket controversy.

Newcastle ‘furious’ over League Cup final allocation, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness has claimed the club won’t be happy about their 31,939 allocation – which is smaller than in the 2023 final.

The cheapest adult ticket is £41, while the most expensive will cost £150.

Wyness insisted price will not be an issue for fans – who would “beg, borrow and steal to be there”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s nothing the club can do about the prices.

“The club are also furious about the amount of tickets they’ve been given – which is less than the last time they reached the cup final.

“Sponsors have taken a lot of those tickets, and it’s a catch-22. They want the sponsors and the revenue, but they want the tickets.

“Fans want tickets, and particularly for Newcastle – they want to be there.

“The allocation was about 31,000 and you could probably sell that 10 times over.

“There’s always going to be an issue. I don’t think price is a big issue, the fans would probably pay whatever it takes – even though they should be a fairer price.

“The city is so in love with the club. The fans would beg, borrow and steal to be there.”

Newcastle prepare Isak contract talks

Football Insider has been told by former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown (12 February) that Newcastle are preparing to hold sit-down contract talks with Alexander Isak.

Arsenal have been linked with the Sweden international although the Magpies plan to price them out of a move with a £150million price tag.

Isak has hit 19 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions this season and is currently under contract until June 2028.
