Newcastle have a 'big problem' amid 'massive' Wood claim pre-Leeds - Mills

Newcastle could find themselves in a “massive hole with no ladder” if they suffer defeat against Leeds United, according to Danny Mills.

However, the former England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed new signing Chris Wood will have a “point to prove” against his old side.

19th-place Newcastle face 15th-place Leeds United just a week on from the Tyneside club’s agonising last-gasp collapse against fellow strugglers Watford (15 January).

Speaking after the 1-1 draw and quoted by the Shields Gazette, Eddie Howe admitted the mood in the Magpies dressing room was “quiet and disappointed”.

Mills insisted Newcastle’s ability to see out games is their “biggest problem” at present.

He suggested Leeds United will be “more than happy” to come away from Elland Road with a point.

“Chris Wood will be looking to prove a point,” he told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“Kieran Trippier could play a key role in that, also.

“If Newcastle lose this, that puts Leeds on 25 points – and you start looking at the table and thinking it’ll be three from Watford, Newcastle, Norwich, and Burnley to go down.

“If they lose, it’s 12 points from 21 games – and that is a huge uphill battle. That’s a massive hole with no ladder.

“I can’t see Newcastle winning a game at the moment, and that’s their biggest problem – they don’t have the confidence to see out a game. Another draw does them absolutely no favours.

“I think Leeds will be more than happy to take a draw, it’s another point on the board for them and another two points Newcastle can’t get.”

Newcastle have dropped 21 points from winning positions in the Premier League this term.

The Magpies have conceded the second-most goals in the top flight (43).
