Newcastle ready to swoop for striker eager to quit PL club as £52.6m trio head for exit - report
Newcastle United are ready to make a swoop for Leicester striker Kelechi Iheanacho as he looks to leave the King Power in time for Wednesday’s transfer deadline, according to a report.
The Mirror claimed in their live transfer blog on Sunday [10:32am] that Newcastle are monitoring Iheanacho’s situation as he remains eager to quit Leicester.
However it is understood that the Foxes may be reluctant to let the former Manchester City forward leave as Leonardo Ulloa, Islam Slimani and Ahmed Musa are all heading for the exit.
That trio of strikers cost Premier League club Leicester a combined £52.6million and all arrived at the King Power as record signings, but it appears that Claude Puel is now willing to cash in on them.
That may leave Iheanacho stuck at the 2015/16 Premier League champions, who will then just have Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki as centre-forwards.
Nigeria international Iheanacho has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Leicester since his £25million move from Man City in the summer.
He has scored five goals in that time, with four of them coming in his last two FA Cup outings.
Football Insider verdict
Iheanacho would be a very good signing for Newcastle. He has not settled down at Leicester having failed to force his way into the first-team and may have to leave in order to stop his budding career from stalling. The 21-year-old showed at Man City that he has bags of talent – and that is exactly why the Magpies probably will not be able to sign him. Rafa Benitez is working on a tight budget and there’s little chance Leicester would want to lose any money on the player they signed for £25million in the summer. That is fee that Newcastle will not likely be able to meet and a loan deal may also be out of the question as Leicester may not want to send him out to a direct Premier League rival.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are in the hunt to sign this £6million-rated forward who has been tipped for stardom by Frank Lampard.
