Alan Shearer exchanged several tweets with Sunderland fan and former England cricketer Paul Collingwood over his playful banter regarding Newcastle.

The pair struck up a friendly conversation after Alan Shearer replied to cricketer Stuart Broad’s tweet of a video suggesting what Shearer would have looked like playing alongside Peter Crouch.

The video was actually of Broad and his 6ft teammate James Vince combining to score a goal as they played football together.

The Newcastle United and England international happily responded to the video with an emoji representing clapping and another reminiscent of the celebration the striker made famous.

Former England cricketer Collingwood then opted to get involved with the conversation by making a joke about Shearer’s aggressive playing style.

However, Shearer was quick to respond with a jab at Collingwood’s football team Sunderland.

Mangerless Sunderland are bottom of the Championship with just 10 points from 16 games, in their first season since being relegated from the Premier League.

Though Collingwood was not ready to admit defeat, and responded that his side were only struggling due to not having the Magpies to beat.

Last season, even though Sunderland ended up being relegated, they did not lose to Newcastle United in either meeting.

In fact, Sunderland inflicted a heavy 3-0 defeat on the Magpies with the other league meeting ending in a 1-1 draw at St James Park.

Shearer came back with one more response, pointing out that six points would still only put Sunderland fifth from bottom.
