Newcastle United legend Shay Given has tipped the club’s manager Rafael Benitez to get on the phone with his contacts to try and secure the signing of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge in January.
The Magpies look set to be in the market for a new forward in next month’s transfer window, despite having brought in Joselu from Stoke City over the summer.
The Spanish forward is level with last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle in terms of goals scored during the current campaign, but the duo have netted just three goals each, with Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, Benitez’s other option up front, scoring once.
With bolstering the threat up front a priority, ex-Magpie shot stopper Given, who made 461 appearances during his time on Tyneside, has urged the club to go after Liverpool’s Sturridge, who he feels is an ambitious but realistic transfer target for January.
He told the Express: “Somebody, like Sturridge, why not? You’d have to ask Daniel if he’d want to come.
“He’s not playing regularly at Liverpool. I’m sure Rafa knows lots about him with the Liverpool connections and that would be really good.
“But we’re not gonna be able to attract the big, big stars, it’s a sort of process of getting to that level where you can compete with the big clubs.”
Sturridge has struggled for game time at Anfield this season, with three goals in 14 appearances, although only five of those have been in the starting XI for the club’s Premier League games.
The 26-time-capped England international has a total of 64 goals under his belt for the Reds in his 133 outings, and may well be seeking more regular game time ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign next summer.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are expected to submit an official bid for another Premier League forward.
