‘Newcastle must get creative to dodge PSR’ – new points deduction bombshell

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle must “get creative” with sponsorships and new revenue streams to allow them to continue spending in the transfer market.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – called on the Saudi ownership and commercial director Peter Silverstone to “come to the party” and partner with the PIF’s big stable of worldwide companies for the Magpies’ benefit.

Newcastle failed to complete a senior signing in the January transfer window – instead agreeing exits for Lloyd Kelly and Miguel Almiron to ensure they comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The St James’ Park club also sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last summer (2024) amid fears over a potential PSR breach and subsequent points deduction.

Nevertheless, Eddie Howe’s side sit sixth in the Premier League and are in the race to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Newcastle can find ways around PSR rules’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Almiron has gone out, Kelly has gone out.

“They’ve not spent much this year but over the last three seasons, there has been a significant disparity in the ins and outs.

“If you add up the numbers, it’s past spending which is still coming home to roost for Newcastle.

“They are still pushing at the top of the table, and Eddie Howe is doing a great job.

“PSR is making things competitive, but there are ways around it for Newcastle.

“In my view, the owners have got to get creative going forward. The commercial director, Peter Silverstone, has got to push for creative solutions.

Newcastle

“The answer for Newcastle is for the Saudis to come to the party with sponsorships around the world. They’ve got the contacts with these big companies and they’ve got to find a way to get that money into Newcastle and get the revenue up.

“That’s the only way I can see it happening.”
