Newcastle plot late James Trafford raid – sources

Newcastle United remain interested in signing Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League club held talks with Burnley over a deal for the 21-year-old shot-stopper but could not secure an agreement.

Football Insider revealed earlier in the transfer window that Newcastle had a £15 million bid rejected by Burnley with the Lancashire club holding out for £20 million.

Trafford has started and finished both of Burnley’s Championship games so far this season as new manager Scott Parker seeks to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

Current number one Nick Pope missed a large portion of last season due to a shoulder injury, totaling 27 games.

Eddie Howe’s side have already signed two goalkeepers so far this transfer window but are reluctant to miss out on a player they regard as being one for the future in Trafford.

Newcastle paid Nottingham Forest £22 million for Odysseas Vlachodimos and veteran ‘keeper John Ruddy joined from Birmingham City on a free transfer.

It’s likely to be a busy end of the transfer window for Newcastle United but the Tynesiders may be set to miss out of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.
