Newcastle PSR update as trio of ‘big signings’ on the cards

Newcastle United are expected to make up to three major signings in this summer’s transfer window following spending frustrations.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke issued an update on the current PSR situation at St James’ Park.

Last summer, spending rules proved to be a major problem for Newcastle, who did not make any significant on-field additions.

Beyond that the club were also forced to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton to avoid punishment for breaching financial regulations.

After those setbacks, it has been suggested that Newcastle will look to take “revenge” in the transfer market this summer, and they are in a position to do that.

Newcastle United get PSR update after missing out on Bryan Mbeumo

Despite those seemingly lofty ambitions for the window, there has already been one setback for those at St James’ Park in the close season.

Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo looks set for a move to Man United despite interest from Newcastle, which is a blow for the Magpies given the quality he would add to their side.

Even so, O’Rourke has explained that the Magpies are in a position with regards to PSR, where they will be able to back manager Eddie Howe this summer, even if they will still have some limitations.

He said: “I think their PSR and FFP is a lot better than it was last year, when they had to sell some players just to balance the books, players that Eddie Howe didn’t really want to lose.

They obviously won’t be able to go out and spend willy-nilly or spend the money that they actually do have.

“But look, it’s frustrating for everybody connected with Newcastle that they can’t go out there and spend the money that the owners will obviously have to spend. But yeah, I think they have got money to make at least two big signings, maybe possibly three.”

Eddie Howe needs support at St James’ Park

A hugely successful 2024/25 season not only saw Newcastle end their wait for a trophy with the League Cup, but also qualify for the Champions League for the 2025/26 campaign.

The Magpies therefore need to add to their squad this summer, to ensure they have the quality and depth required to compete at that level next season.

It is also worth noting that Howe has been tipped as a successor to Thomas Tuchel as England manager, and so if they want to keep him, they must ensure he feels happy and supported at St James’ Park.

That will make it vital that Newcastle do make multiple signings over the course of the transfer window for a number of reasons.
