‘Newcastle quietly miss out on another goalkeeper despite Ramsdale breakthrough’

It’s been a frustrating summer so far for Newcastle United, and now, it appears they’ve missed out on another target.

The Magpies looked set to sign striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt before Liverpool hijacked their deal, and now, the Reds are trying to poach goalscoring sensation Alexander Isak.

At the other end of the pitch, James Trafford was another long-time target Newcastle looked to get through the door, only for Manchester City to agree a £27million deal to bring the goalkeeper back to the Etihad Stadium (BBC, 25 July).

Eddie Howe will be feeling the pinch, and Football Insider sources have revealed that the manager is taking some of the blame for this head-scratching transfer window due to some apparent ‘indecisiveness’.

PSG agree Chevalier deal

Lille’s Lucas Chevalier is another goalkeeper Newcastle have been keeping tabs on this summer, with the Tyneside club understood to be admirers alongside Manchester United.

Chevalier was one of the top goalkeepers in Ligue 1 last season and at just 23 years old, is regarded as one of the top up-and-coming prospects in his position.

But now, it looks like he is yet another target Newcastle have not managed to sign, with reports breaking on Monday that Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a deal to pry him from their French rivals.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that PSG have already agreed personal terms with Chevalier, with the two clubs now finishing off the final details of the deal.

Newcastle pushing ahead with Ramsdale

There is a silver lining for Newcastle with the news that they’re edging closer to a deal to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton.

Ramsdale may prove to be a controversial signing after conceding a league-high 66 goals last season. However, he also averaged 4.2 saves per 90 minutes, with no Premier League goalkeeper managing more.

The 27-year-old brings plenty of experience and quality on the ball, and will be motivated by wanting to break back into the England team and add to his five caps to date.

Romano reported on Monday that Ramsdale has already given the green light to a St. James’ Park switch, with the two clubs now working on the details of a loan with a buy option.

Should Ramsdale complete his deal, he will join Anthony Elanga as just Newcastle’s second senior signing this summer, though more are expected with the Magpies preparing for their return to the Champions League.
