‘Newcastle ready to spend £80m this week – Eddie Howe is hot on getting it done’

Newcastle United are yet to kick off their summer business in earnest – one month into an important window for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Magpies have been frustrated in their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo and Joao Pedro – with both players choosing to move elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have seen bids rejected for Anthony Elanga and are facing resistance in their chase for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Howe’s side will play Champions League football next term after finishing fifth in the Premier League table last term.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Newcastle have room for up to £80million of business this summer.

Howe will want Newcastle business done quickly, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Howe will want key signings in place for pre-season and expects Newcastle to ramp up their business in the coming days.

The Magpies face a tough start to their Premier League campaign with Aston Villa and Liverpool lying in wait in their first two games.

Wyness claimed Newcastle may have to pay a premium in this market to get their business done promptly.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I believe Newcastle have about £70-80million of room just now.

“Unless there’s a sale, which there could well be, then that could take it up even further.

“It’s around that sort of level of expenditure still to go.

“It’s the 1st of July now, the new accounting period has opened. With a lot of clubs like Newcastle, Everton, etc the books can really be opened and things are going to start to happen.

“I think we’re going to actually start to see some sales, transactions happening. It’ll always be that dominoes have to fall before one deal gets done, one after another.

“I think we’re going to see that really start to pick up pace in the next week in particular. And they’ve got to get these squads together for pre-season and they’ve got to have that time.

“Newcastle in particular, I know Eddie Howe will be really hot on getting that done. That’s something he’s really big on.

“He will want to see their business done as soon as possible. And they’re one of the club I think will push.

“And if they have to pay that premium to get you know to get deals done I think you’ll see them do it.”
