'I've opened the door' - Manager confirms striker can leave after reported Newcastle approach
By Abigail Withey
Newcastle United have been given a huge boost in their pursuit of Arsenal striker Lucas Perez as Arsene Wenger has given him the green light to move.
Rafa Benitez has been on the look out for another striker after the club’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham during the opening weekend of the Premier League and the Mirror has reported on Sunday that the Magpies had made an approach for the 28-year-old.
It know looks as though the Magpies are a step closer to securing the Spaniard as Wenger has said that he has given Perez permission to leave the Emirates.
The French manager spoke about the striker’s position at the club ahead of the Gunners’ upcoming match against Stoke City.
“It’s a possibility (he will leave),” Wenger said, as quoted by the Mirror. “I’ve opened the door for him.”

The forward moved to the north London club last summer but failed to nail down a regular first team spot after falling behind Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck in Wenger’s pecking order.
Football Insider verdict
Rafa Benitez will feel relieved to have a final boost in the transfer window after he publicly vented his frustrations about the club’s lack of activity over the summer. The Toon boss has also been clear about his need for a new striker, and after his side’s disappointing performance against Tottenham his need is greater than ever. Wenger’s green light will be fanatastic news for Benitez and he will be hoping that their are funds available to secure the Spaniard. Despite Perez’ less than impressive performance at the Emirates during his debut season, he failed to get regular playing time, which is what the Magpies boss will be able to offer him and potentially bring out more of his goal scoring talent.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are edging closer to a £25million signing as an imminent £45million switch triggers a transfer chain of events.
