Newcastle Untied have reignited their interest in Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to a report.
The Chronicle claims that the Magpies were keen on signing the 22-year-old last summer before he joined Crystal Palace on loan and are now back in the hunt for him.
It is understood that Rafael Benitez’s side could make a loan move for the central midfielder, especially if Mikel Merino decided to leave St James’ Park.
Loftus-Cheek is a 6ft 3in (source: Transfermarkt) colossus that is currently away on World Cup duty with England and is extremely highly-rated at Stamford Bridge.
Football Insider verdict:
It is unclear on what Loftus-Cheek’s immediate future looks like, but he certainly wants to be playing regular first-team football next season. The midfield powerhouse is good enough to break into the Chelsea side and a strong summer tournament with England may convince people of that. However, if he becomes available then Newcastle should make sure they are at the front of the queue to sign him. He is a technically gifted midfielder that is reliable in possession and also offers raw power to shrug off opponents. Loftus-Cheek impressed during an injury-hit loan with Palace, where he managed two goals and five assists in 25 appearances. The sky really is the limit for Loftus-Cheek and Newcastle would be landing a real star if he did join. The report also mentions that Chelsea winger Kenedy is also in their sights after he dazzled at St James’ Park on a short-term loan in the recent campaign and a double swoop for both would really set Newcastle up for a strong season.
