Newcastle revelation reveals transformation after 'bad feeling' v Manchester United
Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame has said that the mood around the squad has transformed after securing a shock 1-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend.
The Magpies kicked off Sunday’s game sitting in the relegation zone after results elsewhere had gone against them, but put in a spirited performance to stun the side placed second in the table thanks to Matt Ritchie’s second half strike.
The three points helped Newcastle push away from the bottom three and into 13th ahead of the two week gap from Premier League action, and Diame has revealed just what an impact the result has had for the confidence of the players.
He told the Shields Gazette: “We knew the result of Huddersfield, so the pressure was on us before the game.
“It was a massive three points, to be honest, because we have two weeks without another game.
“We knew we had to do everything to win, but being in the bottom three before the game was a bad feeling. We were dropping too many points here (at home).
“It gives us a lot of confidence. This was three points not a lot of people were expecting us to take.”
Diame has been something of a revelation in the centre of the pitch this season after seeing himself fall behind Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Mikel Merino in the pecking order at St James’ Park earlier in the campaign.
However he has started eight of the last nine games for the Magpies, and built up an impressive partnership with Shelvey to dominate Manchester United’s central pairing of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic on Sunday.
This season he has made 22 appearances for the club, scoring two goals including the opener in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace in their last away game.
In other Newcastle United news, the club are set to secure a £5.2million capture of an international star in summer.
