‘Newcastle set to deliver incredible stadium news after what I’ve heard’

Newcastle United chiefs have sat down for a series of summit meetings this week as the Saudi chiefs plan for the future of the Tyneside giants.

According to The Guardian (24 February), chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has scrutinised plans to either redevelop St James’ Park or move into a new stadium nearby.

Meanwhile, it is claimed transfer plans for Eddie Howe‘s squad and the potential construction of a new training base will also be on the agenda.

But the main area of interest is the stadium situation, with St James’ Park holding 52,000 fans – but is no longer considered fit for purpose in terms of capacity or facilities.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed what he has heard from the crunch meetings in Northumberland this week.

Newcastle fans to get ‘exciting news’ on stadium

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed there is “exciting news to come” on the stadium project.

He suggested the club’s Saudi chiefs are leading towards building a “big, shiny new stadium” instead of redeveloping St James’ Park.

Wyness insisted the feeling within the meetings is “incredibly positive”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The meetings have gone on this week.

“The chairman, Al-Rumayyan, was over for the Forest game – we saw some great photographs of him on the pitch.

“I know those meetings have started, and all I’ve heard is very positive news.

“There is definitely some exciting news to come on the stadium.

“I’ve been saying that it looks like they’re going to stay at St James’ Park, but all the noise coming out seems to be about a big, shiny new stadium.

“It would be an amazing feat of engineering, and they are pioneering a lot of these construction techniques in Saudi for the World Cup.

“I’d personally think St James’ Park is the option, but I hope I’m proved wrong because I’d love to see a new stadium at Newcastle.

“It seems incredibly positive.”
