Newcastle are preparing a surprise bid to sign Leicester defender Wes Morgan, according to a report.
The Sun on Sunday claim the north-east giants have identified the title-winning skipper as a key target ahead of their return to the Premier League.
It is said that Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is keen to strengthen his team’s defence by adding more experience and is ready to sweet-talk Morgan into a deal.
The Sun on Sunday report that the north-east giants will open talks on a price as Benitez seeks the right offer for both Leicester and Morgan himself.
The centre-back, 33, has two years remaining on the Foxes contract he signed in July of last year following the club’s fairytale title triumph.
Morgan has continued to be an integral member of the team this season, making 40 appearances in all competitions, including 27 Premier League starts and a further 10 in the Champions League.
The Sun report that Benitez is also a fan of Hull City’s Harry Maguire as he seeks reinforcements to the centre of a defence that had some difficult moments during their Championship-winning campaign.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club have hijacked Everton’s move for a coveted 23-year-old, with a £75,000-a-week contract to be offered.
